A young woman who spent three days and nights at Miraval, Life in Balance Resort & Spa (5000 E. Via Estancia Miraval, Catalina, 520/825-4000 or 800/232-3969, www.miravalresorts.com, $1,078 and up)—a favorite spot of no less an authority on living life to the fullest than Oprah Winfrey—said when she returned to the real world that henceforth her life would be divided into just two chapters: before Miraval and after Miraval. For what you pay, one should expect some sort of life-changing experience. This world-famous resort, on 400 acres backed by the Santa Catalinas, has 118 rooms, a full-service (and then some) spa, a whirlpool, a sauna, an Olympic-size lap pool, a full gym, an obstacle course, a climbing wall, yoga and Pilates centers, and much more. The rooms are very nice, but with all there is to do here you don’t spend much time inside; still, most of the casita-style accommodations have TVs, DVD players, wireless Internet, and more.
Guests of The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa (800 E. Sunrise Dr., 800/937-8461, www.westinlapalomaresort.com, $195-279) are allowed to use the facilities of the nearby country club, which has a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. The rooms here are spacious and have private patios looking out over the desert, huge sink-in beds, and wireless Internet; some have fireplaces and sunken spa tubs. The resort’s Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa will pamper you silly after you play a few sets on one of 10 championship tennis courts. There are also indoor racquetball courts, a huge pool area, Pilates and yoga studios, and an exercise room.
First built as a private home in 1912, the hacienda-style Westward Look Resort (245 E. Ina Rd., 520/297-1151 or 800/722-2500, www.westwardlook.com, $329-344) has Southwestern charm to spare. Though it has been built up and remodeled over time, the older, adobe portions still have the exposed vigas made from wood brought down from Mount Lemmon. The 241 guest rooms and suites have wireless and plasma TVs and all the usual high-end luxuries, and the resort offers horseback riding, tennis, spa treatments, and 80 acres of desert foothills grounds with nature trails, stargazing programs, and exhibits about the desert’s natural history and native peoples.
